Our Education Staff has developed a series of pre- and post- visit lessons intended to help your class achieve the maximum benefit possible from a field trip to Mission San Luis.
For background information, teachers are encouraged to read A Teacher Guide (PDF, 2.3 Mb). Background information is also provided with each lesson. If you need additional help or wish to make reservations, please call us at 850.487.3711. You may reach the education department via e-mail at programs@missionsanluis.org.
Post-Visit Lessons
Post-visit lessons provide teachers with the opportunity to reinforce the key “big picture” issues that were touched upon prior to the visit and/or during the visit. Such reinforcement may also serve to reveal and help resolve misconceptions and misunderstandings. Finally, these lessons provide a platform for expanding the scope of instruction beyond that which has already taken place.
Overview of Post-Visit Lessons
Post-Visit Lesson #1: Tracing Our Steps (Grades 1-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, PDF, 836 Kb)
This lesson consists of three different activities, each suitable for specific grade levels. Each activity will solidify the learning that has already occurred. They all re-emphasize Florida’s Spanish and Apalachee heritage and Florida’s current demography. The lesson also enhances student awareness of early Spanish exploration, maps, and geography.
Post-Visit Lesson #2: Gender Roles (Grades 3-5, PDF, 332 Kb)
During this lesson, students crystallize and conceptualize information that they were exposed to at Mission San Luis regarding the roles Apalachee and Spanish men, women, and children played in daily life in the 17th century. They will use empirical knowledge of how their own families function to determine how roles have changed. They will also learn that such roles vary according to culture by comparisons to other classmates during discussion.
Post-Visit Lesson #3: Why Cultures Change (Grades, 4-6, PDF, 267 Kb)
Understanding cultural change and adaptation is an important life skill. This lesson provides a more in-depth look at these issues, building upon information students have already learned about the cultural changes the Apalachees and the Spanish experienced at Mission San Luis. This discussion is broadened to consider the larger concept of how and why cultures change.
Post-Visit Lesson #4: Trade and Travel (Grades 6-8, PDF,462 Kb)
This lesson builds on previous discussions of San Luis’ role as a breadbasket for other parts of the Spanish Empire and the importance of trade. Group work provides students with a better understanding of the opportunities and travails of overland trade and the patterns of waterborne commerce. A student activity is part of this lesson. It encourages critical thinking and math skills. ![]()
